Demurrage & Detention

Demurrage & Detention

Container Demurrage: Container demurrage is a fee charged by a shipping line for holding a container at a port or terminal beyond the free allowed period.  This fee is intended to encourage cargo owners to take the units out of the port, ensuring smooth port operations and avoiding container yard congestion.

Container Detention: This charge refers to the time a shipper or consignee keeps the container outside the port area over and above the agreed free time period. This “free time” allows the shipper/consignee to pick up, load/unload, and return the full/empty container without additional fees. Once the free time expires, detention charges apply.
